After seeing thousands of people attend the Urdd Urban Games 2022 in Cardiff Bay registration is now open for the 2023 addition! We’d like to take the chance to look back over the event from 2022 which saw so many great people come together to celebrate the Urban scene.
Leading to the Games we visited schools and community groups to introduce the different sports to the young people of Wales and to promote the event. The sessions were held across 25 different schools which saw over 750 young people take part in Skateboard, Flatland BMX and Breaking sessions. We saw children and young people enjoy these exciting sports with many of them then attending the Urdd Urban Games.
On the weekend itself we saw some amazing performances from novice participants to professional athletes. We saw people of all ages try their hand at 3x3 Basketball, Breaking, Freestyle BMX, Scootering and Skateboarding. It was a pleasure to see the talent that is on offer in Wales and further afield with star performances on the skatepark from the likes of James Jones, Jordan Sharkey, Holly Pipe and Jamie Hull. We saw the next generation of stars in the Breaking and 3x3 Basketball events with the Under 18 categories!
There were all sort of opportunities around the event for spectators and passers-by to get involved in, which included Parkour/Flatland BMX/Skateboarding/WCMX/3x3 Wheelchair Basketball workshops, DJ sets, food stalls and exhibitors! A young group from Wales had the opportunity to learn from professional Djs then played a set to the crowd at the event. The event welcomed local companies to run Flatland BMX, Parkour and Skateboard sessions for beginners to learn new tricks! In addition to the taster sessions and music attendees could help themselves to food, get their bikes fixed, get their skateboard desks decorated by ‘Grip Wizard’ and watch a graffiti artist at work.
